Pencils and Pens No one knows who invented pencil or when it happened. A Swiss described a pencil in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead inside it. (Lead is a very heavy, soft dark gray metal.) Pencils weren"t popular, and people continued to write with pens. They used bird feathers aspens. The Mogao Grottoes area very special place in China, which stand in Dunhuang, Gansu province. The Mogao Grottoes are thousands of years old and were listed as a world cultural heritage (遗产) by UNESCO in 1987.

On May 4, 2023, “Daughter of Dunhuang” Fan Jin shire turned to Peking University an brought back 10 million RMB donations to setup the Fan Jinshi Education Fund(基金) to suppose the research of Dunhuang Studies at Peking University.
